What I eat in a day | Pureed stage | Gastric Bypass
  • Lay 2 Frozen tilapia filets on baking sheet
  • Top tilapia with extra virgin olive oil and pepper
  • Bake at 425 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes
  • Mashed Cauliflower:
  • Cut 1 head of cauliflower in to desired pieces
  • Boil whole head for 20-25 minutes until fork tender
  • Strain all water
  • Mash cauliflower with fork
  • add 3-4 tbsp butter
  • salt and pepper to taste

  • Phase Ii Diet Reminders

    • You must continue to have protein shakes between one and three times a day to meet your protein target, but try to eat more soft solids each day.
    • If you find that you are not hungry, then a protein shake can be substituted in place of a scheduled meal.
    • Take small bites and estimate them to be about the size of a dime.
    • Chew thoroughly before swallowing. Be sure that the food is apple sauce consistency before you swallow.
    • Continue to drink slowly. Sip on non-caloric liquids, fat-free or 1% fat milk and protein supplements throughout the day. Stop drinking 30 minutes BEFORE meal time and start drinking 60 minutes AFTER meal times. This will ensure that your pouch can hold solid foods and you will not experience nausea/vomiting.
    • Continue to meet your protein target goal. You may use protein supplements until you are able to get all your protein from solid foods.
    • Set consistent meal times and stick to these meal times to avoid emotional eating. Eat every 4 hours while you are awake. Do not go over 5 hours without eating anything.
    • Consume 64 to 72 ounces of fluids each day. The total amount of fluid includes protein shakes.

    What Is The Pureed Diet Stage After Bariatric Surgery

    After you have completed the pre bariatric surgery diet, the pureed diet stage is usually the first stage your doctor will advance you to after surgery. Each surgery center has their own specific guidelines but the pureed diet stage usually involves blending your food to a thin, lump free texture. It resembles an applesauce like consistency.

    How To Make Vegetable Puree

    Steam one vegetable at a time. For every vegetable:

    Pour one cup of water into inner pot of Instant Pot. Add veggies .

    Close the lid to Instant Pot and set on manual high pressure for 5 minutes.

    Once time is up, allow for a 5 minute NPR.

    Drain vegetables and add into a food processor.

    Once vegetables are in the food processor, add ¼ tsp butter and 2-3 tbsp milk.

    Puree vegetables into a smooth puree and serve.

    Repeat for every vegetable.

    Gastric Sleeve Post Op Diet Recipes

    Recipes after gastric sleeve surgery are going to be most important because you will be using them for the rest of your life. The first two to three months following your VSG surgery are crucial until you transition to a normalized diet. Discuss with your nutritionist about some recipes for post gastric sleeve surgery according to your personal tastes and preferences. These recipes will broadly come under the following three categories.

    • Liquid Foods: Immediately after your sleeve gastrectomy surgery, you will be put on a clear liquid diet. Within a few days, you will move on to thicker and full bodied liquids and broths. This stage may last for about two weeks.
    • Soft Foods: After the liquid diet, as your incisions are healing, your surgeon will allow you to include pureed foods followed by soft foods in your diet. Ask your nutritionist for gastric sleeve post op diet recipes for this stage.
    • Solid Foods: Once your surgeon determines that your new stomach pouch is tolerating various types of foods, they will ask you to transition to solid, normalized diet. This may happen in about 2 to 3 months post-surgery.

    Pureed Chicken Salad For Bariatric Surgery Patients

    LET’S TALK — Gastric Bypass – Puree Stage

    Pureed chicken salad is one of the recipes I recommend most often to my weight loss surgery patients. This is my favorite recipe!

    One of the most important duties I have as a bariatric dietitian is teaching pre-operative patients about the post-surgery diet. Inevitably when I get to the pureed stage I hear groaning. I get it. What adult wants to eat pureed food?

    I know the idea of eating baby food or pureeing food is not appealing to most adults. I generally do not recommend baby food. Let’s face it, babies spit baby food out. I usually suggest pureeing common foods, but patients don’t usually jump on that idea either. When I explain that a commonly consumed adult food like chicken salad would work patients feel a bit better about this stage.

    One concern often expressed is regarding mayonnaise. Patients assume they can’t eat mayonnaise. Mayo is a source of fat, however lighter varieties are fine to include. Most patients can only handle about 2 oz of chicken, so there won’t be much mayonnaise per serving in this pureed chicken salad.

    To lighten up the pureed chicken salad you can reduce the amount of mayonnaise and add non-fat Greek-style yogurt. You want the chicken salad creamy and pretty smooth. I don’t advise adding anything fancy like celery or onion. These veggies won’t puree smooth enough.

    One chicken breast will yield about 4 ¼ cups servings. I always tell my patients that they would not need a lot of food. Just a few choices rotated through the stage will work.

    The Pureed Stage Diet After Gastric Band Gastric Sleeve Gastric Bypass And Mini Gastric Bypass For Bariatric Patients

    Thepureed stagepart of the post-bariatric surgery diet follows the liquid stage and starts about 3 weeks after the procedure

    Following the liquid stage of the diet, the stomach pouch is still swollen and healing, and not quite ready to digest normal food. Therefore, a slow transition from liquids to solids needs to be made. The pureed diet is exactly what it suggests – blending your food to a puree which allows the stomach to digest food without working too hard.

    What pureed foods can you eat in the pureed stage of your post-surgery diet?

    Making your own pureed food after gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and gastric band will help nourish the body.Protein shakescan be consumed at this stage too as it may be difficult to meet your nutritional needs through food alone. Protein powdercan be added to food too!

    Pureed food is cooked food that needs to beblendedand eaten with a spoon . Similarly to the liquid diet, there should be no lumps or bits to avoid causing pain and discomfort. The consistency of your pureed food should be similar to a thick, smooth yoghurt, or smoothie consistency, but water can be added to make it thinner if you struggle with the thicker consistency. It’s important to invest in agood blender as it will be used in the future to reset too.

    During the pureed stage, it is important to balance your meals with:

    Protein: meat, chicken, fish, lentils, beans and dairy

    Veggies: carrot, squash, beetroot, spinach

    What Is The Purpose Of The Pureed Diet Stage

    You are probably wondering why you should even bother with the bariatric pureed diet stage. Why not just skip ahead? You probably see people that share their journey online saying that they skipped the pureed stage and they were fine. Heres why you should not skip the bariatric pureed diet stage if it was recommended to you by your bariatric program.

    • Pureed foods dont require much chewing. Most people are terrible at chewing and after bariatric surgery it can be very problematic if you dont chew enough. Food that is not chewed well enough tends to be poorly tolerated.
    • Pureed foods tend to be easier to digest. You are still healing from your surgery when you start on pureed foods. The smooth texture is easy on your stomach.
    • Foods in the pureed diet stage are more filling than full liquids. They help you learn what hunger and fullness feels like for you after surgery.
    • Blended and pureed foods are easier to fortify with additional protein if needed. In the early stages of your diet after bariatric surgery your portions will continue to be small. If youre not meeting your protein needs, you can add more protein to the purees you are eating. I will show you how to do it here.

    Recipes To Get You Through The Puree Phase

    Congratulations! Youve made the life changing decision to have weight loss surgery and begin the journey to a life full of possibilities you didnt have before.     In your aftercare packet, your doctor probably provided detailed expectations for what your diet should look like in the weeks leading up to and following your operation.     For our friends still within a week of your surgery date, this blog isnt for you! Not yet at least. During the first week of your post-op diet, most doctors will recommend you consume ONLY clear liquids as to not agitate your healing stomach! But you can still bookmark this page for when its time!

    What about two weeks?

    Nope! Not yet. Still too soon. However, most doctors will graduate you from the clear liquids onto full liquids, like blended soups. Better than clear liquids Im sure, but still not quite to the puree stage, which is what this blog is about!

    What If I Am Not Getting Enough Protein At This Stage

    This is a common concern at this stage. Despite many people able to reach their protein goals, there are also a significant amount of people who are struggling getting in their protein. If this is you then I encourage you to contact your surgery center to let them know what it is going on. They may want to monitor you more closely.

    One tip that may help is to follow a structured schedule. Write down your meal times and the times you are drinking a protein shake. Here is an example of what that may look like.

    Aim to eat protein at every meal. Even though cream of wheat may be allowed, it does not mean it is the best choice. Including pureed protein such as cottage cheese, eggs, or beans, in my experience, tend to be the most tolerated proteins early on.

    Transition To Pureed Foods Gradually

    Your stomach is still swollen and healing from surgery. This will limit how much pureed food you can comfortably eat at one time. You may be surprised by the small portions you are eating.

    Start by slowly eating 1-2 tablespoons of a pureed food. Pause for a couple of minutes before continuing. Youve had enough if you feel full, begin to hiccup, have an itchy nose, sneeze, or sense that one bite more will be too much. Over the course of the week, gradually work up to ¼ to ½ cup of pureed food in each meal, if possible.

    Make Life Easy Meal Prep

    A little prepping now makes life easier later. Your nutritionist will teach you to plan meals at the beginning of the week to help you stay on track with your goals. Prepare batches of pureed foods and freeze the extra portions in an ice cube tray. Then just pop the food cubes in the microwave and youll have a quick and easy meal.

    You can also portion foods into small individual serving sized containers to freeze or refrigerate.

    Everyone wants to smack the Low Carb Tortillas from our hand but no one says what we CAN eat. Weve been eating WRONG foods for a lifetime, how do we suddenly know whats right?

    There are a few food stages that post ops go through fresh from the hospital.

  • Too scared to swallow your own spit
  • Wonton soup without the stuff
  • Boldly drinking cream soups
  • Then we fall straight off the cliff and have NO idea what comes next! People wander into our Bariatric Eating Support Group on Facebook and announce that they ate four bites of a chicken quesadilla that was yummy but made them sick. Of course bedlam ensues as everyone CHANGES TO ALL CAPS AND SCREAMS NO TORTILLAS.

    People are VERY good at telling you what NOT to eat, especially when you tell them what you ate. Heres are some ideas of what you can have with a few photos sprinkled in.

    This is long but be patient and read it carefully as I promise it will help you no matter where you are in food stages from one day to twenty years. Fact.

    These are Full Liquids that you CAN eat full liquids by definition are foods that are smooth and pourable

    • Blend equal parts unsweetened baby food fruit with ricotta
    • Part skim ricotta cheese
