Other Ways To Suppress Weeds

While vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and boiling water can work to kill annual weeds, they won’t work against some of the tougher, perennial weeds. You can still stay organic, but it takes some extra work on your part.

For example, if you’re persistent, you can control Japanese knotweed without resorting to the use of a glyphosate herbicide, which is often the recommendation. Cut the knotweed down, clear dead canes away, and place tarps over the ground. Deprived of sunlight, the weed’s food reserves will eventually be exhausted. There will be shoots beyond the tarps’ perimeter in search of sunlight that you must continually remove.

A single spray will help dry out the weeds in a weeks time. Repeat the process if remnants of the weed continue to persist.

Weed Killer For Areas Never To Grow Again

To kill all vegetation in walkways, driveways and other areas where you dont want any living thing to grow again, mix two cups ordinary table salt with one gallon of white vinegar. Do this in a container that is larger than one-gallon capacity so you have room for the salt. Apply the lid and shake to dissolve the salt. Salt dissolves more quickly in vinegar than in water, but it takes a bit of doing. It may not completely dissolve, but thats okay.

Add 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap . Pour into an ordinary garden sprayer. Apply to weeds or grass on a dry, sunny day to areas you dont want to see vegetation of any kind in the future.

The presence of salt in this recipe is what will eventually bring permanence to your weed killing. The salt will penetrate and leach into the soil. It may take several applications, but in time the presence of salt will sterilize the soil in this area so that nothing will grow there. Plan well before you go this permanent route.

These homemade weed killer recipes are not only cheap, but both are also completely non-toxic to humans and animals. In fact, except for the soap , you could have fun with the family tonight when you tell them you made the salad vinaigrette using 3 parts olive oil to 1 part weed killer!

Recipe #2 Boiling Water & Salt

Weed Killer Using Vinegar Epsom Salt And Dawn Recipe
    Ingredients:
    Instructions:

    1. Boil the water after adding salt.

    2. Shifting the mixture to a sprayer might be dangerous so you can simply pour the mixture over the weeds.

The water needs to be above 200oF, as directed by the University of California Integrated Pest Management Online.

Now if the roots of the weed are deep within the soil, the water may not reach them and they may grow back again but if the boiling water and salt reach the roots, they will destroy the root tissue and make the weed die completely.

So, it is a win-win situation in both cases. After all, you are being saved from the use of chemical weed killers that are harmful to the environment.

This is a great recipe to keep a stock of among gardening must-haves to get rid of younger and new weeds.

You are advised to follow the other recipes involving vinegar if the task at hand is a more demanding. Also, only use this on driveways and pathways because hot water can be harmful to the soil.

Making Your Own Natural Chemical Free Weed Killer Is Relatively Inexpensive

Making your own homemade weed killer can be cheaper than the toxic chemical sprays like Roundup! Ive seen 1 gallon of Roundup listed at $50-109. I can make over 1 gallon of my homemade super powerful chemical free natural weed killer for under $40.On top of the price difference, have you ever noticed that Roundup doesnt kill weeds very fast and the weeds often grow back quickly? I have!

Often, I see weeds growing back faster in my neighbors yard where their gardener sprays Roundup in the sidewalk cracks – meaning they have to spray more often which means it ends up costing more money to kill the weeds.

The most expensive tool that youll need to buy to make your own homemade weed killer is a 2 gallon weed and garden sprayer. Personally, I do not recommend buying a sprayer that has popular herbicide names spread all over the bottle, but thats up to you.

I like to handwrite on the 2 gallon garden sprayer bottle – NO CHEMICALS or HOMEMADE WEED KILLER WITH VINEGAR or HOMEMADE WEED KILLER WITH ESSENTIAL OILS.

My family knows that there are no chemicals in the garden sprayer bottle, but I write on it solely for the purpose of any viewers, a.k.a. my neighbors and neighborhood walkers. I want them to see that I am using SAFE, eco-friendly, non-toxic, chemical free natural weed killer. What I like about this is that sometimes it helps spark some conversation about safer, natural products and why toxic chemicals like Roundup are so dangerous.
