What Is A Skinny Margarita

How to Make an Agave Margarita

What exactly defines a margarita as being skinny versus non-skinny? The sugar content.

The more sugar, which is found in simple syrup, agave, and margarita mixes, the less skinny your margarita will be. Of course, this also means it will taste sweeter.

I sweetened this particular margarita recipe with a little agave, but feel free to sweeten it with simple syrup if you prefer

Triple Sec Vs Orange Liqueur

Grand Marnier and Cointreau are both high-quality liqueurs made from orange peels. So what’s the difference?

It comes down to the type of oranges and alcohol used to make them that separates the two. They are similar in flavor, but you may find you prefer one over the other.

Grand Marnier is considered an orange liqueur, and it is made from brandy and bitter oranges called Citrus Bigaradia. Cointreau is regarded as a triple sec, and it is made from sugar beet alcohol, with a mix of both bitter oranges and sweet oranges.

So which one should you choose in order to make the best margarita humanly possible? If you like a sweeter, smoother flavor, go with the Cointreau. If you want your cocktails a bit more on the dry side, Grand Marnier it is.

And, if you’re big on orange, be sure to add these Cadillac Margaritas to your must-make cocktail list!

The Best Margarita Recipe For Cinco De Mayo

Excited for Cinco de Mayo? Us, too. Want to upgrade your margarita and make it more quickly, without buying boring Triple Sec? Right this way.

Repeat after me: One, two, four. 1-2-4: Memorize that ratio, and youve got the very best margarita recipeagave nectar, lime juice, and tequilaat your disposal at all times. Its called a Tommys Margarita, it involves only three ingredients, and it is divine.

Though its a beloved recipe in the cocktail community, purists will quibble about even calling Tommys a margarita. Theres no Triple Sec or Cointreau in there! Psshht. What it is is delicious, insanely simple, and a delight. The brainchild of San Francisco bartender Julio Bermejo, who concocted it more than two decades ago in an attempt to avoid triple secs overwhelming flavor, it has silky texture and a flavor that is a hymn to the blue agave plant at the heart of the drink. Think: lightly sweet balanced with pure sour, plus a seductive hit of tequila.

Fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and a solid, 100-percent agave tequila are the keys to this recipe. Ive shaken bunches of these up at parties, squeezing all the juice in advance, and everyone marveled that it was among the best margaritas theyd had. Theres something about removing that orange flavor of Cointreau or Triple Sec from the equation that just works, and cutting sugar out of the equation makes your bar cleaner, to boot.

This original recipe has stood the test of over 70 years time. As Margarita Sames said, A Margarita without Cointreau is not worth its salt.

Brief History Of The Margarita

According to cocktail historian David Wondrich, the margarita is merely a popular Mexican and American drink, the Daisy , remade with tequila instead of brandy, which became popular during Prohibition as people drifted over the border for alcohol. There is an account from 1936 of Iowa newspaper editor James Graham finding such a cocktail in Tijuana, years before any of the other margarita creation myths.

What Makes A Skinny Margarita

Admittedly, these are not ‘skinny’ in the sense they are low calorie or any of that nonsense. I’ve found that at most Mexican restaurants, ‘skinny margarita’ refers to the way this one is made – with fresh lime juice and agave nectar – rather than with a mix.

Although sometimes skinny can mean that it’s made with artificial sweeteners to lower the sugar content. That is not this recipe.

    The Perfect Margarita Recipe

You wont find margarita mix in The Weary Chefs house, only this Fresh Margarita!

When I started this blog way back in January 2013, I posted a cocktail recipe every Thursday in preparation for Friday Happy Hour. I kicked things off with my all-time favorite: this authentic, perfect margarita. When I talk about Fiesta Night at our house , half the fun is the food, and the other half is the cocktails, typically these babies.

You will not find margarita mix in my kitchen. These authentic cocktails are tart, strong, and delicious. I strongly prefer a generously salted rim, but salt or dont salt according to your taste. I mix these up in a 2-cup glass measuring cup, which is the reason for the metric measurements. This cocktail is easy to mix using the metric side of the measuring cup as a guide.

If you like real margaritas, this is the recipe for you. All you need are limes, an orange, tequila, a good orange liqueur, and agave nectar. Usually a house margarita at a restaurant uses sweet and sour mix, cheap tequila, and triple sec. Ive certainly had my fair share of house margaritas, but I always think the real deal tastes better at home! When you try the recipe, I think you will agree. Cheers!

    Who Really Invented The Margarita

Asking someone to pinpoint the actual time and place that the Margarita was first created is a controversial subject. Although many people recognize 1948 as the year the year the Margarita was first introduced, there are other claims that predate that time that also bear investigating. Lets examine each of the legends behind the creation of the Margarita in chronological order.

Many people believe that the Margarita was born on Jalisco, Mexico, where blue agave tequila has been produced for centuries. This proto-Margarita was a version of the Daisy cocktail, substituting tequila for brandy. Daisy in Spanish translates to Margarita.

An early legend says that a Mexico City bartender named Willie first created the Margarita in 1934 at the Matamoros area restaurant Los Dos Republicas for a patron named Marguerite Hemery. Another story says that in 1936, bar owner Daniel Negrete presented the drink as a wedding day gift for his son to be sister-in-law, Margarita. According to Daniels son, Salvatore, this version of the Margarita was equal parts lime juice, tequila, and orange liqueur, served over crushed ice.

Another 1938 creation story spun by the Jose Cuervo company says that showgirl Rita De La Rosa moon lighted as a bartender and created the drink on the fly.

National Margarita Day is February 22nd each year here in the United States.

A Toast To Success With This Classic Margarita

The best classic margarita. Made with tequila, lime juice, agave and ...

Some of the greatest things begin on a cocktail napkin. And thats particularly true if its the napkin from a classic margarita. Long, long ago, way back in the infancy of my trial lawyer days when I used to visit my sister and brother-in-law for holidays, a great idea was born. My brother-in-law is a dermatopathologist And he is arguably the best in his field. Hes a skin pathologist. A determine-if-youve-got-cancer-and-will-die-this-year, or you-got-lucky-this-time-and-are-in-the-clear doctor. And theres a lot of skin cancer in Arizona!

So every time I visited, I noticed he would bring home a list of cases that said in large print at the top Must be read by Heathers brother-in-law only. I witnessed this over and over, year after year. I also witnessed his general unhappiness with working for big corporate. He often offered fantastic suggestions to the powers that be, only to have those suggestions fall on deaf ears. Frustrating indeed.
