The creamy Salisbury Steak gravy is made with fresh mushrooms, onions, a packet of dry au jus mix, and 98% fat free condensed cream of mushroom soup. You can grab organic, gluten-free brands of the condensed soup at many grocery stores, if thats a concern for your family.
Youll want to brown the ground beef patties in a hot skillet or in your slow cooker before combining the rest of the ingredients in the Crock Pot. This gives the Salisbury Steak great flavor and texture! I love this slow cooker because it can perform all of the necessary functions which means fewer dishes for me to wash at the end!

Most Lipton onion soup mix recipes are not vegan because they use beef bouillon. But, not this one. All you have to do is whip up a batch of my Vegetable Bouillon Powder and youre good to go. And, dont leave it out. Its the most important element of this recipe.
And, dont sub the vegetable bouillon with a store-bought brand. They usually contain oil, fillers, and are high in sodium. Once you have the bouillon made you only need a few more ingredients. Heres what you need.
- Dried Onion Flakes
- Celery Seed
- Black Pepper
Salt is optional because its already in the vegetable bouillon. So, I would make the dry onion soup mix and then season with salt as needed.

Reduce heat to medium, add mushrooms, if using, and cook for three or four minutes.
Next add onions and cook for another four minutes or so and will add more flavor to your gravy.
Sprinkle flour all over and stir until incorporated, about a minute or two. Dont stop stirring.
Whisk in beef broth and bring to boil. Remember, if you used mushrooms use less broth to make your gravy.
Simmer and stir the sauce periodically until it thickens and becomes smooth, about 4 more minutes.
If you double your gravy recipe remember to expect a longer cook time. If you love gravy like we do this extra step is so worth it.
Off heat, add and stir in the last 2 tablespoons butter.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
