Coarsely Grind The Coffee Beans

Lemon Infused Cold Brew Coffee

Using freshly ground coffee beans for any type of coffee absolutely ups your game. It delivers the best flavor regardless of how youre brewing it.

You do not want to buy preground coffee from the grocery store to make cold brew. Preground coffee is finely ground and ideal for coffee machines, not for cold steeping.

For cold brew, you need coarsely ground coffee. If you have a coffee grinder at home, set it on the coarsest setting usually the one designated for French Press coffee.

I have this coffee grinder and absolutely love it because I can choose the specific grind for any type of coffee Im brewing.

What to do if you dont have a grinder

If you dont have a coffee grinder at home, you have two options:

  • Purchase coffee beans at a local coffee shop or roaster and ask them to grind the beans for you on the coarsest setting. Just tell them youre making DIY cold brew coffee, and they should know what to do!
  • Certain grocery stores have the option of purchasing coffee beans in bulk, along with a grinder. Go ahead and grind them right at the store on the coarsest setting , and youre good to go!

How To Make Cold Brew Coffee + 3 Herbal Additions

Now that summer has arrived, I find myself constantly craving cold brew coffee. This beverage is not simply a traditionally hot brewed coffee, with ice added to it. Its even simpler than that! Basically, its coarse ground coffee beans steeped in room temperature water, overnight. However, as per usual, I will complicate the process by adding a bunch of herbs and spices to the recipe. I cant help myself herbalism infuses so many aspects of my life. Im sure you can relate.

Cold brew coffee is famous for being less acidic and less bitter than your standard cup of coffee. The result is a very smooth and delicious flavor, perfect for these warmer months. Cold-brewed coffee also is more caffeinated than your standard cup of coffee. This detail is nothing to scoff at either, because its too stimulating for some people to consume. So, consider that a fair warning!

I originally wanted to write this blog post because I came up with a spin on what coffee shops affectionally call dirty chai, which is typically one of their off-menu items. If youre not in the know, a dirty chai is basically a standard chai latte, with a shot of espresso added to it. Turns out, chai tea spices work out swimmingly with cold-brewed coffee as well! Youll find the recipe for my dirty chai cold-brewed coffee below, along with two other herb-inspired variations. Do you make herb-infused cold-brewed coffee? What Is The Best Coffee For Making Cold Brew

The same is true here as it is in cooking: your ingredients make a difference. Making cold brew with high-quality beans will give your coffee a more robust, nuanced, and complex flavor. Personally, I feel that this is a more enjoyable coffee drinking experience.

Also, buying beans from companies that care about their product and believe in ethical and sustainable practices, like Westrock Coffee, means you can feel extra-good about your morning cup of coffee. Westrock not only works from Cup to Crop, partnering with farmers to ensure fair trade practices, but lucky for us their high-quality coffee also tastes amazing.

The bottom line: use any coffee that you normally enjoy drinking in other forms , and it will also make excellent cold brew.

What are some ways to flavor my cold brew?

This is one of the most common questions that I get asked. Here are my three favorite ways to flavor cold brew coffee:

1. Flavored simple syrup: Simple syrup is super easy to make — no need to buy it at the store. Just combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan, bring to a simmer, and stir gently until the sugar is dissolved. Cool and store in the fridge for a week or more.

My favorite is to make a vanilla simple syrup by throwing a split vanilla bean in the simple syrup . This more subtle simple syrup pairs well with a lighter roast like Westrock’s Meza Morning blend, which has a nutty aroma and hints of clove and vanilla.

P.S. In a pinch, chocolate milk makes a darn decent mocha!

What Is Hard Cold Brew Coffee

Cold brew is simply a type of coffee that has been brewed with cold water instead of hot water and typically involves a long steeping process . After that, the coffee grounds are strained out and chilled before being served as-is, over ice, or diluted with water.

So like hard kombucha, hard cold brew is simply cold brew coffee infused with alcohol.

Our guide on the best coffee for Toddy cold brew might be useful.

The Cold Brew Process

Nitrogen-Infused Cold Brew Coffee

Step 1. Grind your beans . You want your grounds to be coarse but not so coarse that they cant absorb water. I found that about 15-20 seconds on my grinder was perfect!

Step 2. Place the ground beans into your french press .

Step 3. Add your room temperature or cold water. I like this ratio 1:8. So for every 1 cup of ground beans, I add 8 cups of water. So for this recipe, it calls for ½ cup of ground beans which means I only added 4 cups of water.

Again like most aspects of coffee making, you can change the ratio for different flavors but this is the one I use! For a stronger, more concentrated type of cold brew coffee, you can try a 1:4 ratio.

Step 4. Definitely the hardest step of the whole process, letting the coffee brew. I usually put it in the fridge to brew but I’ve seen some people that just leave it out. Usually, you want to let your cold brew coffee brew for 12 hours. Anything more than 24 is too long and your coffee will become bitter. If you’re using a dark roast for your vanilla cold brew coffee, you can let it sit for as little 4 hours and still get decent results but it’s not optimal. Anything shorter than 4 you should just make Iced Coffee instead. I usually brew the coffee at night and take it out in the morning when I wake up but that takes some planning and sometimes I’m not the best at that lol.

Use Flavored Coffee Beans

Some of the best flavored cold brew coffee comes from brewing with flavored coffee beans. You can use any flavored coffee beans you like, including exotic or fun flavors such as salted caramel, chocolate cherry, or blueberry muffin.

This technique infuses flavor directly into the coffee without having to add additional sugar, syrups, or dairy products.

When making cold brew, be sure to coarsely grind the coffee beans. This will help prevent over-extraction .

How To Strain Your Cold Brew

Once youre done steeping the coffee, youll need to strain the coffee grounds out of the water. A fine-mesh sieve or French press filter isnt sufficient . Most methods will suggest using cheese cloth, but I hate cheese cloth! Its difficult to work with and seems so wasteful.

I played around with other options and found two that work great. See my photos for examples of each. Choose one:

  • Thin paper coffee filters: Use the basket paper filters that splay out in a round seashell shape like you see here. Make sure your filter is made of very thin paper, not a thicker material that will take forever to filter through. These are the filters I used.
  • A vintage handkerchief: Yes, reallyany small, thin, clean, lint-free, cotton cloth like a cocktail napkin will do. It should be large enough to cover your sieve when draped across it. I found my handkerchief at the bottom of my photo props, and I love that its easy to wash and reusable .
  • To strain, simply place the coffee filter into a small fine-mesh sieve, or drape your cloth over the sieve. Place it over a pitcher or liquid measuring cup, and pour the concentrate through it. Thats it!

Have I convinced you to try making cold brew coffee at home? Its so much cheaper than buying it from the coffee shop! Please let me know how it turns out for you in the comments.

Want to change it up? Try making cold brew iced tea. Like cold brew coffee, its more smooth and less bitter.

    Extra Tips That Might Help

If you want to filter your cold brew coffee correctly, you can do so by adding a sieve with a kitchen towel or cheesecloth and pouring the mixture through there.

Additionally, you can use a coffee filter of the Chemex or Hario V60 and pour the coffee mixture through there this will help remove the smallest coffee particles that just dont want to go.

You can also use a cold brew coffee maker to make your cold brew coffee. When youre using this cold brew maker, you can skip the steps of filtering the coffee because it uses a fine-mesh sieve that sits in the coffee while steeping.

You just have to remove the sieve, and youre left with a clean cold brew coffee that you can use instantly. If this is something that youre interested in, you can check it out here:

Also, Ive found that 15 hours is the best time for cold brew coffee to steep. When you prolong the steeping, the coffee will get stronger, but it leaves a weird taste behind. Any shorter than 15 hours and the coffee is a bit under-extracted in my opinion.

You want the coffee to be strong in flavor but not too overpowering. It still needs to cut through the sweetness of the vanilla syrup and coconut add-ins. This balanced coffee flavor is achieved with 15 hours of steeping time.

    Can I use decaf beans?

Yep, you can totally use decaf coffee beans to make decaf cold brew. The process is exactly the same.

    Can I double the recipe?

You absolutely can double, triple, or quadruple the recipe to batch prep plenty of cold brew! Youll just need to make sure you have a big enough container to brew it, or rather you can simply brew multiple batches at once.

Why Should You Cold Brew Your Coffee

This coffee-making method has a few things going for it:

    • The slow infusion pulls all the great coffee flavor from the beans .
    • But it also leaves behind most of the compounds that can make coffee taste bitter and sour.
    • This means that cold brewed coffee is incredibly smooth and almost sweet-tasting. Perfect for iced coffee.

    Simply Recipes / Michelle Becker

You can also adjust the concentration of your cold brew coffee, making it stronger or less strong to suit your taste. Start with one cup of beans steeped in four cups of water. This will make a fairly concentrated coffee on its own, but it’s perfect for pouring over ice or mixing with milk – or both. If that ratio of beans to water isn’t quite to your taste, adjust it up or down until you hit the perfect balance for you.

I also really love that this method for making coffee actually saves me time in the morning. I make a big batch over the weekend, starting it on Saturday or Sunday night and straining it the next morning, and then stash it in the fridge for an easy coffee fix all week long.

How To Make Cold Brew Coffee

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup organic coffee beans
    • 4 cups room temperature water

    Directions

  • Grind coffee beans to a coarse consistency, similar to a cornmeal-like consistency. You do not want the grounds to be too fine.
  • Place the ground coffee beans in a quart jar.
  • Pour the water into the jar and stir.
  • Cap the jar with a lid.
  • Allow to infuse for approximately 12 hours. I make mine in the evening and allow it to infuse overnight. You can infuse it either in the fridge or on the counter at room temperature.
  • Strain the water from the grounds. You can use a coffee press, pour-over filter, or even a sprout screen.
  • Serve with ice cubes. Add optional creamer and sweetener of choice.
