Are Oat Bars Healthy

Energy Sustaining Breakfast Bars Gluten free, Nut free, Soy free, Dairy free

This obviously depends on the exact oat bar in question but they are usually a healthier snack choice because they are based on whole grains.

Choose healthier oat bars by making some that are lower in added sugar and saturated fats while featuring more wholesome ingredients like nuts or dried fruit.

Oatmeal Breakfast Bars Ingredients

  • Rolled Oats: You can use regular or quick cooking oat. Quick oats will have a more delicate texture. If you are gluten free, be sure to look for certified gluten free oats.
  • Almond Flour: almond flour has a nutty flavor and texture, but you can substitute whole wheat or regular flour, too.
  • Banana: mash a large ripe banana. Mashed bananas can be stored in the freezer.
  • Peanut Butter: use your favorite peanut butter, almond or cashew butter. You can use unsweetened varieties if preferred.
  • Coconut Oil: this oil is solid at room temperature, so you will want to melt and cool it.
  • Maple Syrup: adds a touch of sweetness. You can also use raw honey.
  • Leavening: both baking powder and baking soda are added for texture and lift.
  • Vanilla Extract: vanilla enhances the flavor of all the other ingredients.
  • Salt: just a pinch.
  • Strawberries: use frozen or fresh sliced strawberries.
  • Turbinado Sugar: an optional garnish to sprinkle on top.

Why Is Nutri Grain Bad For You

With only small amounts of fiber and protein in each Nutri-Grain bar, theyre very unlikely to keep you satiated for long. Nutri-Grain bars are high in added sugar while containing only middling amounts of fiber and protein. Quite honestly, thats a terrible formula if youre looking for a healthy, nutritious bar.

This healthy breakfast bars recipe is made with whole grain oats and oat flour, and plain yogurt. The perfect grab-and-go recipe for busy weekday mornings and they taste just like Nutri-Grain bars!

These bars certainly arent sugar-free, and they have more than just whole grain oats and oat flour, but it can be so fun for a gluten free family to eat what everyone else can have. The crust on these bars is perfectly tender and chewy, and only lightly sweet, so the strawberry filling seems just right.

Dont worry that there are more than a couple of ingredient in this recipe! You make the simple crust all in one bowl, then roll out the dough, cut it into 4-inch squares and fill them with some preserves.

Can I Make These Bars Without Oats

Oats in any form on a gluten free diet can be controversial. Although I use purity protocol gluten free oats in my gluten free house all the time, I know not everyone can tolerate them.

If youd like to make these bars without oats at all, I have good news! A few simple swaps and these gluten free breakfast bars will be oat-free and still hearty and tasty.

Typically, when Im replacing oats in their various forms, I replace oat flour with quinoa flakes and rolled oats with beaten rice. Here, since Ive made both shortbread crusts and crumble toppings without oats entirely, its even easier to make all parts of these bars without oats.

    Granola Bar Recipe Tips

    • Use smooth nut butter. This recipe works best with smooth nut or seed butter. If your nut or seed butter is too dry or thick, it will not mix well with the other ingredients.
    • Do not cut the chilling time short. These granola bars need to be refrigerated to set and become firm. Refrigerate the bars for at least one hour before the bars are cut.
    • Store the bars in the refrigerator or freezer. Place the cut bars in an airtight container. I recommend storing them with a sheet of parchment paper between layers so that the bars dont stick together. The bars will keep for a week in the refrigerator. You can also freeze the bars for up to 2 months. If the bars are frozen, allow them to thaw at room temperature for 20 minutes before eating them.

Heres What Youll Need To Make These Delicious Homemade Grain

    • Nuts: This is the base for these grain-free granola bars. Instead of oats, we are using a variety of nuts. You can use whatever nuts you like best. I recommend a mixture of roasted almonds, pecans, and walnuts for the best flavor and crunch!
    • Peanut Butter: Peanut Butter is a protein-rich spread high in zinc, vitamin B-6, and magnesium! You can substitute with almond, cashew, or sunflower butter for a paleo option. The peanut butter, Medjool dates blend, and maple syrup work to bind the ingredients together.
    • Medjool Dates And Maple Syrup: Dates are natures candy and coupled with maple syrup, provide the perfect amount of sweetness while keeping these granola bars healthy and refined sugar-free! Pro Tip: Soak your dates in water for at least 15 minutes before blending. This softens the dates and helps them blend easier.
    • Ground Flaxseeds And Hemp Seeds: Both are filled with protein, fiber, and omega-3s. In 2 tablespoons, flaxseeds provide 3 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber, hemp seeds provide 7 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber!
    • Shredded Coconut And Dried Fruit: Adding coconut shavings, dried fruit, and even chocolate chips are completely optional! I like to add coconut and dried cranberries so delish!

How To Make Gluten Free Oatmeal Bars Without Eggs

Before starting any baked recipe, check to see if theres a flax egg and oven time. First preheat the oven, then make the flax eggs, then prep all of your ingredients.

To make gluten free oatmeal bars without eggs, well be making 2 flax eggs.

First, preheat the oven to 350°F. Then, line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper. This recipe is made for an 8-inch pan, so I dont recommend using a 9-inch pan. The bars will be too thin. Then, make your 2 flax eggs and set them aside for later.

Grab a large mixing bowl and add in all of the dry ingredients: oats, oat flour, coconut, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk everything together until well mixed.

Next, grab a medium mixing bowl and add in all of the wet ingredients: flax eggs, coconut oil, nut butter, coconut sugar and vanilla. Use a clean whisk to whisk all of these wet ingredients together until you get a cohesive and mostly smooth mixture.

Now, scrape the entirety of the wet ingredients into the large mixing bowl, over the dry ingredients mix. Use a rubber spatula to stir and fold both components together until combined into a dough.

Fold in your favorites: chocolate chips, chopped walnuts, seeds, or even dried fruit. Be sure to chop nuts and fruit until you get small pieces. Large ones will create crumbly bars.

Pour your oatmeal bar mixture into the lined baking pan. Smooth into an even layer.

Bake for about 25 minutes, then cool, slice and enjoy the best dairy free oatmeal bars!

    Why This Recipe Works

This easy recipe is perfect for reluctant bakers or folks looking for quick baking wins. Grab a spoon, mix the dry and wet ingredients and bake em.

Between gathering and prepping the ingredients, mixing, and baking, this recipe will take about 45 minutes.

Not only are these bars gluten-free, but they are powered by healthy rolled oats. They are not as sweet as traditional oatmeal raisin cookies, making them perfect for breakfast or a healthy dessert.

Soaking The Oats And Dried Fruits

Soaking the oats helps decrease the amount of phytic acid and increase their nutritional value. Dried fruit is dirty and they often have added sugars, juices, or oils. So soaking and discarding the water afterwards helps remove all those things.

Additionally soaking the dried fruits will make them plumper, juicier, and softer even after baking. Some dried fruits have health-promoting benefits for the microflora in the digestive tract also because they help regulate the bowel movements.
