The New Old Fashioned Cocktail

The Best Whiskey For Your OLD FASHIONED (according to whiskey lovers)

Who wants a drink? Its been a long week. Lets relax with an Old Fashioned, one of the oldest cocktails around. The Old Fashioned is for whiskey lovers, certainly, but it also might convince naysayers to become whiskey cocktail drinkers after all.

Like mulled wine, the Old Fashioned is perfect during the holidays, on chilly evenings, and basically any time you find yourself sitting around a fire. Its a bold, dynamic drink thats a little citrusy and a little sweet.

I came up with one delicious twist on the classic recipe, which also happens to be a shortcut. If youve been following this blog for a while, I bet you can guess what it is.

Thats right, I used maple syrup instead of simple syrup. Historically, Old Fashioned cocktails are made with a sugar cube or simple syrup. Im here to tell you that they taste better with maple syrup, which complements bourbons caramel notes and stirs in like a dream.

Back when the Old Fashioned gained popularity, maple syrup was not readily accessible. Lucky for us, it is now. This recipe yields the best Old Fashioned youll ever make at home. I hope youll give it a try!

Wild Turkey Rare Breed

Wild Turkey Rare Breed has one of the best flavors. It has high alcohol content at 56.1 % ABV, and it offers a lot of depth and complexity like a classic bourbon. The nose alone has roasted nuts and dark fruit. The flavor is another story.

It has mint, eucalyptus, herbs, brown sugar, oak, pepper, and toffee. It is mid-bodied but with a luscious, savory finish that is a little hot, especially when drank straight.

You can elevate your Old Fashioned mix with this bottle, priced at roughly $63 per 750ml.

Also Read:

  • Half teaspoon sugar or one sugar cube or simple syrup
  • Angostura bitters or Orange bitters

Instructions:

Start by getting your rocks glass ready for the Old Fashioned recipe. Place sugar and bitters in a rocks glass and add water. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Simple syrup will blend in faster. Fill the glass with ice, then pour in the bourbon. Stir. Garnish your Old Fashioned mix with orange peel.

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is an innovative approach to twice-barreled bourbon that creates a rich and colorful flavor unlike any other bourbon in the market. Starting with Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, which is matured in handcrafted new white oak barrels the bourbon is then uniquely matured for a second time in another new barrel. The second barrel is deeply toasted before a light charring, creating the unique flavors of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, a smooth, full-bodied bourbon with a long, rich finish.

This spirit is already a little bitter to begin with, so it needs some extra help in the sugar or simple syrup department to make it passable. Otherwise theres just too much bitterness in the glass.

The flavors overall are great, though. With that extra sweetness added, the cocktail is quite nice, and the extra vanilla and oak flavors of the spirit balance nicely with the orange peel and other fruity notes.

How much does Woodford Reserve Double Oaked cost?

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked costs around $50 per bottle.

The Best Old Fashioned With A Secret Ingredient Perfect Drink For Fall

November 9, 2017 By The Hungry Dater

I know Ive said it before, but Im a seasonal drinker. It seems that whenever the month changes on the calendar, my palate changes with it.

One November evening, after I learned how to make these drinks, I found myself at a bar with some friends. I ordered an Old Fashioned and the girl looked at me with a totally blank stare. I realized this bartender working at a new semi-hip bar, didnt know how to make one of THE classic drinks of the 20th Century!!! In the era where Mad Men is one of the most popular shows on television, it was surprising that she hadnt heard of it.

My dad always says there are three levels of learning: 1) learning 2) understanding and 3) the ability to teach someone else. It was a huge turning point for non-mixoloist-me that night when I taught her how to make an Old Fashioned in as perfect a way as she could have for her first time, and without access to my secret ingredient.

In a land super familiar with La Croix right now, the secret ingredient of the Perfect Old Fashioned isnt really as secret as it used to be. An Old Fashioned is a perfectly balanced mixture of bourbon, bitters, sugar, a muddled orange slice and cherry, and a splash of soda water. But to seriously take this classic cocktail to the next level with a modern twist, I used flavored soda water. I generally use mineral water with an orange essence. You dont need much, and the small amount of orange flavor really rounds out the whole flavor.

Having Fun With The Ice

Four Roses – Old Fashioned Product Commercial.

Since weve gotten into making Old Fashioned cocktails at home, Adam dorked out a little and looked into the how and why of clear, large ice cubes. None of this is required for your cocktail, but since we used two of his ice balls in our photo and considering weve already bonded over our love of the Old Fashioned, I thought Id take a shot at explaining what weve learned.

Im sure youve seen various large ice cube molds like this sphere mold . The problem is that if you just add water and freeze, you will be left with cloudy ice. Worse still, if you use the sphere mold, the water freezes in such a way that when you add the sphere to your drink, it has a very high chance of breaking into pieces.

This all matters because cloudier ice cubes are less dense so they melt much quicker and break apart easier than clearer ice cubes. In other words, the clearer ice cubes are, the less dilution your cocktail will need to endure. And bonus, clear ice looks cooler.

So how do you make clear ice cubes? There are quite a few gadgets you can buy online. We went the more DIY, budget-friendly route. After some research, we found this tutorial for making clear ice balls using an insulated mug.

We use our tap water since we have found it freeze quite clear using this method. The tap water in the last home we had did not produce clear cubes so we found that it was best to use filtered or boiled water.

Here are the steps for doing it :

  • Fill the mold with water.

    Bar Mash Old Fashioned

The old fashioned cocktail is a cocktail as rich with history as flavor, and my personal favorite drink of choice. I love the simplicity, complexity, aroma, flavor and even the history of it. An old fashioned can be whipped up in a matter of seconds with 3 simple ingredients of whiskey, bitters, and simple syrup, or it can be crafted carefully with many ingredient and garnish variations. The best old fashioned I ever had stuck to the roots of the classic cocktail with just a few small, yet delightful changes, which changed my taste for the cocktail forever.

I settled into a local bar one after noon after enjoying a Kansas City Royals baseball game. After a few cold beers at the game it was time for a change. This particular bar was known for their craft whiskey concoctions, so I didn’t hesitate to place my order for an old fashioned. I didn’t have a good view of the bartender, but the staff behind the bar moved so quickly it would have been hard to keep up even if I did. Shortly after, the cocktail arrived. A few observations worth pointing out:

    – The drink was served in traditional low ball whiskey cocktail glass

    – There were no ice cubes, sphere, or block

    – The orange peel garnish was in the drink, not on the rim cocktail cherry rested on the bottom of the glass

    – The smell of toasted wood and very slight wave of smoke still visible on the drink was very intriguing.
