Why Make Your Own Lip Balm

DIY CopyCat Recipe of Burt’s Bees Lip Balm / How To Make Lip Balm

Conventional lip balms often contain questionable ingredients.

  • Fragrance or flavor can be the most toxic ingredients in todays cosmetics. Did you know that beauty companies are not legally required to disclose what chemicals make up fragrance or flavor on their labels. What a tricky loop hole. Fragrance is a huge endocrine disruptor and is an important ingredient to omit from all your personal products as well as detergents.
  • Parabens are used as a preservatives and can be detrimental to your hormones. They are known to increase the risk of breast cancer and other reproductive issues.
  • Petroleum jelly is a highly refined oil made from fossil fuel. Not only does it block our pores, it also contains carcinogens and chemicals known to cause estrogen dominance. I stir very clear of petroleum based products because you can actually make your own vaseline with the same consistency in the same way were making this homemade lip balm!
  • Synthetic dyes are often added to lip balms and are composed of heavy metals that cause allergies and irritation, and can accumulate in the body and eventually cause cancer.

Making your own lip balm ensures that you have full control over what is in your product.

This Whole Thing Started On Account Of All The Beeswax

Burt Shavitz and Roxanne Quimby created Burts Bees in the early 1980s. In their former lives, Burt worked as a photojournalist in Manhattan, and Roxanne was an artist living in San Francisco. Each left behind the harried pace of city life to seekand eventually findfreedom in the remote, pristine wilderness of Maine.

Burt settled into a new life as the local bee man after finding a stray beehive and learning how to eke out a living selling honey. One day, Burt pulled over for a hitchhiking Roxanne in his schoolbus-yellow pickup truck, and the two hit it off. Burt was a resourceful guy hed been stowing away the surplus beeswax from his honey business, knowing it might eventually come in handy. Burt taught Roxanne about his bees, and she found a book of recipes which they used to turn their waxy bounty into things like candles and lip balm .

WHATS IN A NAME?

Burts original beehives were labeled Burts Bees so he could track them down if bee thieves carried them off.

Burt and Roxanne valued the simple life, and knew the importance and personal worth of staying connected to nature. Their lifestyle was low-impact, and socially and environmentally conscious. As back-to-basics, D-I-Y types, they were ahead of their timetheir approach is as compelling now as ever.

Homemade Lip Balm: Burts Bees Copycat

You asked how my new recipe went last week so here are the resultsLOVE IT!

Burts Bees. Some of us have used it since high school or even before. It was a staple in our purses and pockets. Then those meanies went and changed the recipe and the formula just never felt that same smooth and super tingly way again. Did that happen to you too? Last year I tried a few copycat recipes with no success. One was too hard. One was too soft. They both had no peppermint zing to them AT ALL. Minty lip balmmaybe? Burts Bees wannabee? Nope.

I know that its not possible to claim an exact replica because Id have to have a lab and well, I just have a kitchen with a sleeping pug in it. This is the closest Ive come to a matched recipe and Im super happy with it. Id love to hear your feedback to help us all get closer to a lip balm that has only a couple of pure, whole ingredients and is SUPER easy to make in bulk or as a gift! The ingredients on the Burts Bees chap-stick state that they use sunflower oil, but I opted for the more nourishing jojoba oil. I use round metal tins from Specialty Bottle or sliding ones from SKS Bottle instead of filling plastic tubes because we try to be a plastic-free household. The round tins were only 42 cents! Sticking your finger in a tin isnt as easy, but you can actually apply this balm to most areas of your body, so the tin is actually quite handy!

If youve never made lip balm, its SO EASY! You just

Where Does Beeswax Come From Anyway

As a beekeeper, we have a lot of wax left over from when we harvest honey from the hives. Bees make the wax to create cells, which form that hexagonal honeycomb pattern. The cells can be used to lay eggs, raise brood, and keep honey that the bees store for the winter. The honey is stored in these hexagonal cells, and when the moisture has been cured out from the honey, the bees will cover the cells with a wax seal. This is called capping. It preserves the honey for the winter, and keeps the moisture from ruining their honey stores.

When we harvest honey, we scrape the honey and wax from the frames. Once the honey gets filtered into a separate bucket we are left with the wax. We melt the wax to remove any impurities, and then keep it to make great products like this!

Here is a frame full of honey, perfectly capped in beeswax:

I DUPED Burt’s Bees! | DIY Peppermint Beeswax Lip Balm

Copycat Burt’s Bees Moisturizing Lip Balm Recipe I don’t know about you but during the winter my poor lips take a beating from the cold weather. As soon as November hits, I’m having to apply copious amounts of lip balm to keep my lips from cracking. I have a few go-to favorite lip balms but recently I’ve been using Burt’s Bees Moisturizing Lip Balm most often and what I really like about it is that it isn’t overly waxy. Unfortunately, Burt’s Bees products are also very expensive . As much as I like these lip balms I figured I could probably come pretty close to making a similar recipe on my own.

After reviewing the ingredients and researching other recipes, this is the recipe I came up with. It’s ridiculously moisturizing and seems to stay on well too. Now, I know there are recipes out there with fewer ingredients but if you want it to be most like Burt’s Bees then you’ll want to stick with the ingredients on the list below. The recipe is really easy to put together and from start to finish only takes about 15 minutes to make.

Everyone that I’ve given these lip balms to rave about how great they are and how it’s saved their lips so far this winter. I keep one in my office, one on my bedside table and one in my purse so I’m never without. These amazing moisturizing lip balms also make great gifts or stocking stuffers.

What Can You Use Instead Of Beeswax For Lip Balm

As you can see, youll need 20 grams of beeswax to make Burts Bees lip balm at home. I believe this is essential in making a copycat lip balm, but if you want to know what you can use instead of beeswax for lip balm, some readers in the past have used soy wax and said it works.

Since soy wax isnt any harder than beeswax its an equal replacement as far as measurement goes. I personally like the beeswax for lip balm as I feel it provides more of a protectant and moisture quality than soy wax for lip balm would.

What Ingredients Are In Beeswax Lip Balm

Typically a good lip balm contains plant based organic oils, beeswax and sometimes a solid butter like shea butter, cocoa butter or mango butter. Butters make a diy lip balm extra creamy! You can add your favorite essential oils to flavor as well as treat specific conditions.

I used organic coconut oil and sunflower seed oil in this beeswax lip balm recipe because I was trying to get as close to the Burts Bees product as possible but you could use whatever oils you have on hand.

Where To Find The Best Beeswax:

I prefer to get my beeswax from Mountain Rose Herbs which is one of my favorite brands to get high quality carrier oils and essential oils. I have yet to find a beeswax with as high a quality as theirs. Ill be honest, it is hard to find quality beeswax. Often times there are synthetic fillers added to it. Plus, do the the method of extracting bees from the wax, beeswax can have a smoke smell rather than its typical sweet subtle scent.

I have used THESE white beeswax pastilles from Amazon and they have worked well but there were hit and miss reviews.

Find Mountain Rose Herbs beeswax HERE.

Is Beeswax Good For Lip Balm

Beeswax is perfect for lip balms. It creates luxurious, creamy products and I love working with it.

Not only does beeswax make an oil into a balm, it also moisturizes the skin, helps accelerate healing and acts as a protective barrier over the skin.

If you are vegan and prefer not to use an animal product but still would like to make this homemade lip balm recipe you can substitute beeswax for candelilla wax.

Can You Put Essential Oil On Your Lips

As long as youre using the food safe essential oils listed in this Burts Bees lip balm copycat recipe, then its safe to use essential oils on your lips.

Even aromatherapy addicts know that you cant place some essential oils directly on your skin without a carrier oil. Some essential oils are too potent to use directly on the skin, lips, or any other body part. But the ones listed are safe for using on lips.
