Whats In This Bloody Mary

Cento San Marzano Spicy Horseradish Bloody Mary

As with most cocktails, each person has their own special ratio of Bloody Mary ingredients they like to use. But no matter what flavor and texture you prefer your homemade Bloody Mary to have, the number one rule is you must make it with a good Bloody Mary mix. While there are some decent bloody Mary mixes on the market, creating your own bloody Mary mix guarantees a fresh and flavorful mix.

Heres what youll need:

  • Tomato juiceI use regular tomato juice as the base for my mix but if you prefer a bit more bite, V-8 or Clamato have built in flavor. Clamato is a bit thinner if you prefer the texture. I like to serve one mild option and one spicy. And then I spice it up even more once it hits my glass.
  • Prepared hot horseradish
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Freshly ground black pepper and kosher salt
  • Vodka . Cucumber or jalapeño would be a fun option too. Or, stay classic with unflavored brands like Titos, Effen, Ketel One, Stoli, or Smirnoff #57. Lastly, feel free to omit the alcohol entirely if you prefer.

A Bartender We Know Locally Makes Her Special Spicy Bloody Mary On Saturdays Only Saturdays

Each Bloody Mary that Shelly makes is a labor of love. Shelly is the one who stops for the cocktail shrimp to grace each Bloody before she gets to work and then she crafts each one individually. I have had 3 during a visit once or twice, they are just that good!

Once one person orders one of Shelly’s Spicy Bloody Mary drinks, usually a few heads turn and a then instantly a few more orders get put in.

Now when out all other Bloody Mary Drinks disappoint us, she has wrecked us, lol! Especially when you ask for a Spicy Bloody Mary cocktail. So many bartenders just add a bunch of Tabasco to the drink. Noooo, no! That’s just awful, it’s like you are drinking Tabasco. No thank you.

Horseradish is the key to making a great Bloody IMO, and Kelchner’s is the BEST!!. Pickle juice and or pepperoncini juice is a great addition too especially if it’s from spicy pickles, mmmm! Is it Saturday yet??

    Bloody Mary Recipe

A good Bloody Mary is a thing of beauty. Flavorful, colorful, and more substantial than your average cocktail, this sippable standard has intrigued and challenged many a bartender, myself included. As a fledgling craft mixologist, I experimented quite a bit with Bloody Mary formulations, working hard to get all the flavor points into perfect alignment. My roommates and I hosted brunches to showcase and refine our beverage inventions, always searching for ways to take this classic cocktail to new levels of deliciousness.

The great challenge with this beloved beverage is managing its complexity. The best Bloody Marys possess a sublime balance of richness, tartness, heat, and even a tinge of sweetness, and all must blend together seamlessly. A few small tweaks can either take your Bloody Mary from good to sublime, or throw it unpalatably out of proportion For me, the addition of horseradish extract was the key to unlocking the drinks ultimate potential. The addition of tinctures, or extracts, to cocktails is an old school mixology trick. Functioning much like bitters, herbal extracts are an excellent way to add concentrated flavor notes to round-out your cocktailswith all the precision a conscientious bartender requires.

Here is my version of the Perfect Bloody Mary, tied together with our spicy, fresh horseradish extract and smoked paprika. Sip, savor, and enjoy!

For The Absolute Best Bloody Mary Use Tomato Juice Fresh Horseradish And Plenty Of Other Savory Ingredients

Queen of the brunch table, arch-nemesis of hangovers, and mistress of the morning. Max Davidson of the Daily Telegraph has called it the “world’s most complex cocktail,” if only for the sheer number of ingredients that can go into it. Add into that the number of different spirit-based variations , and you end up with more options than you can shake a, well, a shaker at.

The ingredients and flavor profiles of a Bloody Mary are as complex and varied as the hangovers that spawn them. Not only that, but according to the American Chemical Society, the unique combination of ingredients and their reactions with each other creates literally hundreds of different flavor compounds that cover the entire range of human taste with the exception of bitterness. These flavor compounds are volatile and ever-changing, which means that for best results, you should mix your Bloody Mary fresh and serve it over plenty of ice to keep those chemical reactions at bay and keep the flavor in your glass.

Some people prefer the straight-up salty sweetness of tomato juice and celery. Others , the nose-biting, sinus-clearing pungency of horseradish or the hot bite of black pepper. Still others like to taint their drinks with copious amounts of briny olive juice .

So you can see the problem with trying to come up with “an ultimate” Bloody Mary recipe. One person’s cure might be another’s sickness. Horses for courses. Different drinks for different needs, and all that.

    Ingredients For Horseradish Bloody Mary

    • Tomato juice I like to use either straight tomato juice or a tomato vegetable blend for bloody Mary cocktails. Use whatever you like the best.
    • Vodka This is the base of a bloody Mary cocktail. If youre not a drinker you can always leave the vodka out.
    • Lime juice Just a touch of freshness to bring a big bright citrus flavor. Lemon also works well here but my family always prefers lime.
    • Horseradish You want to make sure to use a hot or mild grated horseradish. Not horseradish sauce that contains mayonnaise.
    • Tabasco sauce More or less depending on your love of spice.
    • Worcestershire sauce This brings in an umami flavor that gives the cocktail depth of flavor.
    • Spices I used both celery salt and fresh cracked pepper for this cocktail.
    • Celery stalk Not only is the celery a tasty snack while sipping its also a great little tool used to stir your cocktail.

This post was originally sponsored by Sabra and so I wanted to keep some of my original posts to include the delicious hummus toast you see in the photos! This is a great serving pairing that is perfect as a snack, brunch, or even light lunch or dinner.

Have skewers on hand that are long enough to fit the size of your trimmings for maximum load-ability. You dont want your guests to feel shortchanged on the garnishes.

Have plenty of ice on hand. Bloody Marys are best when refreshingly cold. Top the glasses to the rim with ice, and refrigerate the Mary mix before serving.

Create different flavored salts to rim your glass by combining kosher salt with different chile powders or herbs. Pour salts on small plates that just fit the rim of your glass. To coat, pour a small amount of water on a small plate. Roll the rim of the glass in the water and then in the salt.

  • Why Do They Put Celery In A Bloody Mary

Bloody Marys are traditionally garnished with a stick or two of celery. The story goes, in 1970 a bartender from Chicagos famous Pump Room couldnt find a straw for the drink and added a celery stick instead. Now the celery stick is basically a required garnish for this The astringent and crunchy properties of the celery help cut through the thickness of the tomato juice. Not to mention it complements the other savory elements of the drink.

Start With Tomato Juice Clamato Or V8

Tomatoes put the blood in the bloody, and give Bloody Marys their unique savory quality. They contain high levels of glutamic acid, the essential amino acid that gives savory foods like meat, cheese, and mushrooms their mouthwatering umami flavor. This is the single most important ingredient in a Bloody Mary, so make sure you get a high quality, flavorful tomato juice.

    Variations:

    • V8 Juice for those who like a bit more complexity and vegetable matter in their cocktail.
    • Clamato adds another layer of savoriness, though it can be horribly off-putting to some.

I’m a straight-up tomato juice kind of guy here.
