When Should My Baby Start Using A Spoon

You can give your baby a spoon at any time, but he probably wont be able to actually start feeding himself until at least 10 months of age and sometimes much later. Making Baby Food For Your 10

Making baby food at this stage is a lot of fun. Your amazing baby has developed some wonderful new skills and you feel more confident in choosing the right foods for him.

After months of pureeing, mashing and carefully introducing new foods, making baby food now become a little easier. Your baby is probably enjoying more textured foods and has sampled a wide variety of flavours.

You are now in a better position to cater to your babys tastes, because you have been able to identify just what he likes and what he doesnt!

Remember, though, that your babys tastebuds are developing all the time. So dont give up on a particular type of food just try it again from time to time. You may be surprised by his reaction!

Is This Baby Food Chart Suitable To My Baby

This Indian baby food chart is a generalized one suitable for most babies. However i suggest you to use your judgement whether to include or not, certain ingredients in your babies diet based on your babies allergies, intolerance, appetite, likes and dislikes.

I have tried to link most Indian baby food recipes that I have posted earlier on this blog. Many were written almost 5 years ago and are updated regularly with new tips based on the readers reviews.

This Indian baby food chart was developed by me based on what i fed my 2 kids, whose birth weight was 3.3 kgs and 3.4 kgs. The ideas were basically drawn from the health and baby weaning booklets that were given to us during our visits to the singapore clinics, hospitals and few from clinics in Bangalore.

This chart is also suitable to babies who were preterm born or were underweight. However I suggest mums with such babies to consult a pediatrician if you are skeptical about these foods.

Quinoa And Banana Mash

A nutrition rich and filling meal that is great for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients:

  • chopped coriander leaves

How to Prepare:

Clean the dal and rice. Soak both of them in water for thirty minutes. Heat the ghee in a pressure cooker. Now add the cumin seeds till they crackle. Follow it with dal and rice and then vegetables. All these can be sautéed, followed by a pinch of salt. Add water and pressure cook this for 3-4 whistles, till everything is well- cooked.

Mash khichdi lightly with a spoon. Serve it with a little ghee on the top.

Indian Baby Food Chart For Babies Above 7 Months Or From 8 Months

Wake up 6 am
Milk
Breakfast 7.30 to 8 am
One of the following:
Rice with dal ka pani and light cooked vegetables.Soft Rice with tomato rasam and light steamed or cooked vegetables.
Bed time 8.30 to 9 pm
Large serving of Milk. Make sure there is a gap of at least 1 hour 30 mins in between the completion of dinner and milk. For babies above 12 months: If the baby is still hungry after the milk, can feed some light crackers.

How To Introduce New Foods

If your baby is partial to purées, you can make mealtime easy by using their favorite jarred or homemade baby food in innovative ways. For example, instead of serving pureed peas alone, you might stir them into mashed potatoes or cooked pasta. Jarred peaches can be swirled into unsweetened yogurt, and pears can become a pancake toppingyou get the idea.

Your little one is also likely interested in trying more finger foods at this age. You don’t have to put the spoons awayin fact, you can try giving your baby utensil practice by offering them a pre-loaded spoon to self-feedbut consider giving your older baby lots of opportunities to use their fingers by giving them safe foods to grab like soft, steamed cauliflower florets, slices of well-cooked egg omelet, or spears of ripe banana. These foods will broaden their tastes and allow them to practice their pincer grasp.

As you add new foods to your baby’s diet, continue watching for allergies, as you did when your baby first started on solids. Every time you add new foods to your baby’s diet, keep an eye out for allergies, just as you did when they first started solids. It’s perfectly normal, of course, to see your child make funny faces as they experience new tastes and textures, and they’ll inevitably reject some foods along the way.

Dont Let Frustration Get The Best Of You Both

As you continue to explore new blends and flavors of food, you may encounter some hesitancy with the new and unfamiliar. If this is the case, it is often reassuring for baby to see you try and enjoy this new food as well. Afterward you can put a bit of the food on their finger for them to try if they still seem skeptical. If it still doesnt go over well the first time, feel free to try again later. It can take up to 15 times for a baby to accept a new food. You can also mix in foods you already know they love to introduce newer flavors and gradually reduce the amount of the familiar food to allow the newer taste to shine through.

Baked Sweet Potato Pure

In-the-know adults eat sweet potatoes for their health benefits. Sweet potatoes are loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber, so it makes sense that your baby can benefit from this delicious tuber, too.

A simple purée with a touch of water or your babys milk makes for a yummy and nutritious first food.

Vegetable Khichdi For 10 Months Old

Baby Food – 9 to 12 months

An absolutely versatile way of feeding veggies and dal to your baby. This is a complete meal in itself and you can feed even older children without mashing it. If you do not want to add spices you can add ghee at the end after khichdi is prepared.

Here we give three variations of the simple khichdi. The first one is the vegetable khichdi with moong dal and rice. Since baby is a little older, now you can introduce some spices like cumin, mustard, bay leaf and cinnamon. Spinach is a great addition to any recipe and palak or spinach khichdi is a welcome change from regular khichdi.

They are also rich in nutrients, filling tummy for a long time and helps in healthy weight gain in babies.

Finger Food Ideas For Older Babies/ Baby Finger Food Recipes 12 Months

Once your baby is used to the first level of finger foods, he can move on to the next level with more complex textures and flavors. This will usually be around the age of 9 or 10 months, but follow your babys cue before introducing any new dish. Here is a list of finger food recipes for babies 9-12 months.

Remember that no two kids are alike just because your older one was feasting on chicken at 8 months, doesnt guarantee that your younger one will do the same! Best Tips For Stage 3 Foods

Vegetable Egg Mash Recipe
  • Aim to include a range of textures and flavors so baby has a wide variety of food experiences.
  • It is normal for some babies to like certain textures more than others, but do your best to continue offering all foods and ensure that the food you offer is easy to eat.
  • You can let baby feed themselves with their hands, offer preloaded spoons , bites of food on a spoon, or a combination of the methods. With any of them, allow baby to decide when the meal is done, so end it when she turns her head, signs all done or gives another signal that the meal is over.
  • Follow babys cues for hunger and fullness.
  • Remember that there is a natural range among babies as far as how into food they are. Yours may be more or less into it, and that can be normal.
  • Babies continue to rely on breastmilk and formula for their main nutritional needs until age 1, though solids gradually become more and more importantand are needed for nutrients including iron.
  • At this stage, it is normal for a baby to be eating 1-2 meals. You can increase or decrease according to babys interest and hunger for solids, and also for your schedule.

How To Store And Reheat

Storage

  • Fridge place in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer if you think you will be defrosting them individually then place them one on top of the other and then separate them with parchment paper followed by placing them in an airtight container. Once defrosted, use within 24 hours.

Reheating from frozen

  • Reheat in the oven at 180°C / 350°F for about 5-10 min.
  • Reheat in toaster for 1 min on defrost setting
  • Reheat in microwave for about 15 sec on defrost setting

Baby Brown Rice Cereal

Rice cereal is one of the most common foods to introduce because its less allergenic and easily digested.

Mixing it to a fairly thin texture can help babies make the transition from an all-liquid diet to a more solid one. This same process can be applied to steel-cut oats.

This buttery treat is a wonderful good fats food for babys brain and physical development. Plus, the creamy texture of perfectly ripe avocado is one that babies seem to love.

My Baby Still Doesnt Like Lumpy Food

Many babies prefer pureed food to more textured foods our fourth child, up to the age of 2, would have been delighted if wed pureed everything!

But learning to chew is important to your babys development. So, although its tempting to give in and remove those lumpy bits when making baby food, try matching your babys stubbornness with your own and resist!

Serve foods that contain lumps within a sauce chopped pasta with a creamy sauce is a good example. Offer your baby plenty of finger foods, which encourage biting and chewing. And be patient your baby will eventually get the hang of it!

Special Dietary Requirements For Your Nine

A very important event happens around this time teething! While teething, most babies lose their appetite due to the pain, discomfort and swelling caused by rupturing gums . Therefore, it is important to persuade her to eat as much as she can. Do not cave in to her protests and refusals and simply take the easy way out by giving her the bottle she will miss out on vital nutrients and fiber that her body needs.

Failing to maintain a proper solid diet can make your baby lose weight and also cause long term harm by depriving the brain of nutrients vital to healthy cognitive development. Lastly, remember that a child learns lifes eating patterns within the first three years of her life. That is the big picture!

How To Serve Baby

Baby-led weaning

  • 6-9 month old cut the pancakes in length and width of your index finger so they can easily grab them
  • 9 month+ or pincer grasp cut into smaller bite size pieces, the size of your pinky fingernail if you prefer
  • You can serve these with a thin smear of nut butter and fruit mashed or cut up age appropriately

Toddler

  • Serve them whole, the same as you would for adults
  • Spread peanut butter on them and then fold like a sandwich to make them mess free but delicious

Let Them Eat With Their Hands

Once your little ones first birthday is near, they may be ready to try feeding themselves bits of finger foods. If you notice them using their forefinger and thumb to pick things up while playing, this comes in handy during meal times, too, so they can get little morsels to their mouths from the high chair tray. Small chunks of ripe peeled fruits, well cooked vegetables or pea sized chunks of chicken, ground beef, egg or other soft meats are all good choices at this age.

If you dont feel your child is ready for finger foods, there is certainly no need to rush things. You know what is best for your baby and when they are ready. There is no rigid timeline you have to follow, so go with your intuition as you encourage your little ones growing tastes and abilities.

Infant Formulas For Your Nine Month Old Baby:

If you have already weaned your baby, you can always opt to feed her formula. Infant formula, also known as baby milk powder, is designed to provide the same advantages breast milk does. You can either bottle feed the formula, or mix it in a cup and feed it to your baby as a meal.

American Academy of Pediatrics has laid down guidelines for infant milk formula. There are different types of infant formula, here they are:

  • Standard Milk Based Formula: This milk powder is made from protein derived from cows milk. Lactose and minerals from cows milk is blended with vegetable oils, minerals and vitamins to make it resemble breast milk for the infants convenience. Most babies suffer from colic but this is not due to cows milk formula, and parents dont need to switch to other formulas.
  • Soy Based Formulas: As the name suggests this infant formula is made of soy proteins. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends soy infant formula if the parents dont want to introduce animal protein to the baby. Also those babies who suffer lactose intolerance or galactosemia can have soy milk formula. Also soy infant formulas help to deal with milk allergies and colic in babies.
  • Hypoallergenic Milk Formulas : These types of milk formulas are suitable for babies who are allergic to milk proteins. Those babies who have rashes and wheezing due to allergies can opt for hypoallergenic milk. This hypoallergenic formula is much more expensive than regular formulas.
