Vegetarian foods are some of the best first foods for baby! There are tons of wonderful and nutritious fruit and veggie options that suit young eaters, like berries, bananas, avocados, potatoes, broccoli, squash, and many others. Non-produce vegetarian items are great first foods for baby, too. Think tofu strips, eggs , beans, nut butter, and oatmeal.

Just be sure you serve these in safe shapes and forms, and that theyre soft enough to be mashed between your fingers. Always avoid serving things that are hard, sticky, or chewy, and keep in mind that many raw vegetables and fruits are choking hazards .

How To Blend Baby Food

Once your fruit/veggies are cooked, its time to blend. For this you can use a blender, food processor or even an immersion blender. Ive been using my Vitamix and LOVE it for making baby food because its really powerful and makes the blends so smooth and creamy. Some foods dont need to be blended for babies who are okay with a more chunky texture. You can simply mash them well with a fork.

Green Bean Baby Food Puree

  • Set up a saucepan with a steaming insert, filled with just enough water to reach the insert. Bring the pot of water to a boil.

  • Meanwhile, trim the ends of the green beans and destring them. Then cut them into lengths of 3 to 4 centimetres.

  • Add the beans to the steaming insert over the pot of boiling water, and cover with a tight-fitting lid.

  • Steam the beans until tender, about 8 to 12 minutes.

  • Transfer the green beans to a food processor or blender, and puree until smooth. Thin with water if necessary. Leave it slightly chunky if youâve started introducing textured food to your baby. Cool to a safe temperature before serving.

  • This baby food puree recipe works just as well with other vegetables. Mix up the flavours and make sure to include veggies that arenât sweet, like broccoli, cauliflower or spinach.

    When Is The Best Time For Introducing Solids To A Baby

    According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is not recommended that babies start solids until between 4 months and 6 months old.

    This doesnt mean you have to give your baby solids at this age, it just means starting solids before this age might not be a good idea for a number of reasons.

    When introducing solids, it is also recommended that you introduce one food at a time. This is so that youll be able to tell if your baby has any allergies or food sensitivities.

    Check for signs such as diarrhea, rashes or vomiting. If any of these symptoms show up after giving baby a new food, you should stop serving it immediately and contact your babys doctor.

    If youve introduced a new food and there are no symptoms after 2-3 days, you can introduce another.

    If your baby has reached the recommended age and youre still not sure if you want to let her eat table food yet, ask yourself these questions to help make a decision:

    • Is your baby acting dissatisfied with only milk?

    If she is still happy, and content with just milk, you may be able to hold off on the solids for a bit longer.

    Use these easy steps to guide you through the process to delicious homemade baby food in no time.

  • BUY. Organic food is best, but any fresh foods will be a good addition to babys diet.

    • Prep: youll want to start by ensuring your fruit or vegetable of choice is thoroughly cleaned. Even if youre using organic fruits and vegetables, youll want to washed and dry your produce! Once the produce is clean, youre ready to peel and chop into chunks. You can skip this step for some fruits or veggies.
    • Cook: some foods like banana and avocado dont need to be cooked, but many do. For cooking, you can steam, boil or roast. I recommend using a fork to test that theyre tender and soft.
    • Blend: place cooked food into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth , adding liquid as needed.

    Feeding Your Baby: From 10 To 12 Months

    From about 10 months, your baby should now be having 3 meals a day , in addition to their usual milk feeds.

    Around this age, your baby may have about 3 milk feeds a day .

  • Preheat your oven to 190 degrees Celsius . Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Cut the sweet potato into half, lengthwise, and place it cut-side-down on your prepared baking sheet.

  • Bake until soft and tender .

  • Scoop the baked sweet potato flesh out from the skin and transfer the flesh to a food processor or use a blender or handheld mixer. Puree until smooth. Thin out the puree with a little water if needed. If your baby is ready for a coarser texture, you can even mash the sweet potato with a fork or potato masher.     Food For 6 Months Old Baby :

    -Vegetables such as pumpkin, potato, carrots, sweet potato, green peas, french beans are healthy options that can be included in the food chart for 6 months old baby. These veggies should be well steamed and can be given in puree or mashed form. Start with very dilute purees and gradually thicken them as your baby gets used to it.

    -Fruits such as banana, apple, papaya, chikoo, apricots, prunes, mango, peaches are necessary for the overall growth and development of your baby. Make sure it is one fruit at a time. Fruits can be given in puree or mashed form as well. You can also boil or steam the fruit, following by blending or mashing it.

    -It is the perfect time to introduce water into your babys diet. Make sure to boil the water thoroughly before feeding your baby.

    -Include cereals in the food chart as nothing can be healthier than oats, rice, and barley. For oats or barley, you can boil them and add formula or breast milk and add a fruit of your choice.

    -Cook the rice properly, mash it and then add formula or breastmilk to it. Alternatively, you can also cook the rice and few vegetables together in a pressure cooker and then mash the mixture to a fine paste.

    The Best Pureed First Foods

    If youre going the puree route, you can start with many of the same foods. Just mash up the sweet potato, avocado, bananaor whatever else, really!and serve those as purees. You may want to thin them some with breastmilk or formula.

    But shortly after starting with these foods, I would move on to introducing allergenic foods, because the early and repeated introduction of allergenic foods can be protective against the development of food allergies in babies, specifically for peanuts. Foods like yogurt and peanut butter may be good early options for allergenic introductions and are already in pureed form. Just start with small amounts.
